I saw a man
He was filled with pain –
Sitting all alone
In the pouring rain.
His clothes were dirty,
And an old ragged coat –
Tears filled my eyes
With a lump in my throat!
He was talking to himself,
Words I didn’t understand –
This sadness before me
Of a broken man!
As the winds blew . . .
Maybe from the south –
His beard was all shaggy,
And no teeth in his mouth.
But then I saw a smile,
And it was so plain –
He seemed to be content
Even in his pain.
So how did this happen?
Broken and all alone –
A skeleton of a man . . .
Under a bridge was his home!
